Announcements for Friday, August 30

The first week of school was fantastic.  Our students learned the procedures for learning and behavior.  All students learned how to come into the school, find their class, learn the routines for the day and finally find their way to their end of day transportation.  Thank you to all of our staff for their hard work and organization.  We have the best and most committed staff in the state of Texas.

Car Pick Up
Great job to everyone on car and parent pick up. We finished on the first day of school at 4:07, and on every day after that we finished before 3:50. To help make the line move faster, we ask that you pull forward to buckle seat belts, so the cars behind you can pull up to load their children. Again thank you for making car pick up very quick and smooth. Finally, please know that all students must be picked up by 4:00 p.m.

College Day and Open House on Thursday, Sep. 5
This Thursday, we are having our 2nd College Day, and parents are invited to join us from 7:30 - 8:30 a.m.  Donuts will be provided, and parents are encouraged to wear their college shirts and visit their child's class from 7:30 - 8:00  to see how much we are already learning. At 8:00, we will have Title 1 parent meeting in the gym, and it will end around 8:30. Also, early voting in the Tax Ratification Election will be held in the foyer from 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

We will have College Days throughout the year, and we encourage students and staff to wear college gear to school. The purpose of College Day is to start promoting College Readiness now. Every student has the potential to receive a college or vocational education beyond high school. Now is the time to begin promoting that to every student in our school.

Boy Scouts
The Boy Scouts will be here on Thursday, Sep. 5 to have sign ups. They will speak to 1st - 4th grade boys during PE and have sign ups on Thursday evening from 7 - 8 p.m. in the 2nd - 4th grade cafeteria.

Beginning of School Information

Well, we are almost ready for school to start on Monday, August 26.  The class lists are pretty much complete.  The teachers are busy getting ready for your children to return, and we are excited about the 2013 school year.

GES Receives 2 of 3 Distinctions on STAAR Test

Before, I tell you the reminders about the start of school, I would like to brag on our campus.  Gilmer Elementary School just received it's accountability rating from the Texas Education Agency.  Our campus received a rating of "Met Standard" which means that our campus did a great job on the STAAR test last year.  This also means that the campus has been removed from the list of Unacceptable Schools in the state.  This is a great accomplishment, and I would like to congratulate our teachers, students and parents for a job well done.

To add to our success, Gilmer Elementary School received 2 of 3 Distinctions in Mathematics Achievement and Student Progress.  Very few schools in the state received 2 distinctions, and Gilmer Elementary is one of those schools.  We are extremely proud of this achievement as it means that Gilmer Elementary is a school that is improving at a rapid pace.

Campus Tour

If you are new to our school, please take a tour of the school by watching this video.  It will give you and your child a better idea of how our campus is set up.

Parent Pick-Up Procedures

This year, all parents must pick up a new car tag.  Last year's car tags are no longer valid.  To learn our parent pick up procedures, please take a minute and watch this video.

Meet the Teacher

We look forward to seeing everyone on Thursday, August 22 from 5:30 to 7:00 for Meet the Teacher.  This will be a great night, and we look forward to seeing you.  Please bring your school supplies to class and make sure that your child's transportation plans and emergency contacts are communicated to your child's teacher.  This will help make our first day of school go very smoothly.
