Welcome to Deputy Laughlin

Welcome to Deputy Toby Laughlin (pronounced as LOF-lin).  He is our new school resource officer at Gilmer Elementary School.  Deputy Laughlin retired from Longview Police Department where he served for over 20 years and gained many experiences including serving as the school resource officer for Pine Tree Independent School District.  He is very excited to be a part of our campus, and we are very fortunate to have him and his experience protecting and serving the staff, students and parents at Gilmer Elementary.  If you ever have any questions about school safety and what we do to protect our children, please give Deputy Laughlin a call.

Red Ribbon Week begins Monday, October 28

RED RIBBON WEEK
OCTOBER 28-November 1, 2013

Friday, October 25, 2013
Next week we will celebrate Red Ribbon Week.  Red Ribbon Week is a nationwide anti-drug campaign that usually takes place in the last week of October. Its focus is on the prevention of drug use through education.  This year’s Red Ribbon Week theme is “A Healthy Me Is Drug Free”. During the morning announcements Mr. Wink will announce ideas to help kids recognize good choices and healthy behavior.  Today, teachers will send home a red note to inform parents and kids of the activities that we will be having at school next week to promote a drug free life style.  On Monday, let’s all wear bright neon colors to kick off Red Ribbon Week!

Monday, October 28, 2013

Today is the first day of Red Ribbon Week at GES.  We are definitely “Too Bright to do Drugs!  Always take care of your body.  Never smoke, drink alcohol, or take drugs.

Wear red today? Are you Red-Y to be Healthy and Drug free?  Tonight everyone wearing red will get into the GHS Volleyball game at a discount price.  Let’s support the volleyball team!

Wear Crazy socks so we can Sock It To Drugs!  GES students will definitely Sock It To Drugs!  Stick up for what you believe.  If someone offers you drugs say “No” and walk away.  Some ways to say “No” are:  “No thanks”, “I don’t like it”, “It’s against the law”, “I’ve got to go now”, “No way!”, or “My parents won’t let me”.

Team Up Against Drugs so wear your favorite college or professional team shirt.  It’s not too early to start thinking about what college you would like to attend.  Tonight is Halloween, and it is traditionally a night filled with lots of fun. Here are some ideas to help you stay healthy and safe.

     1.  Only go trick or treating with a responsible adult.
     2.  Do not eat any treats until you bring them home to be examined by your parent.
     3.  Never go into the home of a stranger or get into their car.
     4.  Make sure your carry a flashlight, glow stick or have reflective tape on your costume to make yourself more visible to cars.

Friday, November 1, 2013
Friday is the last day of Red Ribbon Week.  Wear orange or your Gilmer spirit shirt to show your support for the Buckeyes!  “Orrrange You Glad to be Drug Free”?

We hope your child learned a lot this week about staying drug free and being healthy.  During this week children signed a pledge to stay in school and keep themselves drug free.  This pledge isn’t just for a week; we must always make good healthy choices and not smoke, drink alcohol, or take illegal drugs.  “Be free like me. Gilmer Buckeyes are drug free!”

Yamboree is around the corner.  The town is a buzz of the upcoming festivities to celebrate one of the best traditions in the state of Texas.  I hope you have a great 3 days next week celebrating with your friends and family.

Report cards are coming out on Thursday.  If you have a question about your child's report card, please be sure to contact your child's teacher first.  They can answer all of your questions about your child's grades, learning and behavior for the 1st 6 weeks.

Our first CHAMPs assembly is this Friday.  Times are listed below, so come celebrate all of the great learning behavior and attendance that we have had this first 6 weeks of school.  It is going to be a great day.

Our next college day will be on Thursday, October 31.  Please join us in promoting a college and career culture at GES by buying a college tshirt the next time you go to the store.  Wearing a college shirt is one way that we help kids believe that they are going to college.

Speaking of T-Shirts.  We have GES t-shirts available for purchase in the office.  If you would like to buy one, stop by the office and order yours today.  They are very cool, and we have several colors to choose from.
